What needs to be remembered

At the end of nine or ten years of schooling, only 32.7 % of the students reach the minimum threshold of reading skills and 22.6 % in mathematics. A significant proportion of the students have not consolidated what was expected at the end of primary school.

Three key messages

  • Still poorly mastered minimum skills

Only one in three students has mastered the minimum skills in reading, and less than one in four in mathematics.

  • Reading and mathematics do not tell the same story

The diagnosis is not the same across disciplines; one system may succeed in one and fail in the other.

  • Difficulties already visible upstream

The main theme emphasizes one point: the problem is not access to school, but the way in which the skills acquired in primary school deteriorate before reaching the high school level.
